For years and years and years and years your typical best-dressed men list looked pretty much exactly the same. It comprised some really good day suits, some really good evening suits and some variations on the theme of sports casual, all accessorised with jawlines that looked to have been chiselled by Michelangelo.
There’s been no change when it comes to the jawlines this year. But there has been an influx of colour and character, if not, in the case of actors such as Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig, downright quirkiness.
Behold, among other unimaginables, the sky blue suit (Damian Lewis), the op-art trousers (Pitt) and pretty much everything worn by Craig. “Am I pushing it too far?” the British actor asked The Sunday Times this month. “I don’t know. It just feels like fun.”
And therein lies the nub. Men are now allowed to have fun with what they wear too. Here’s our line-up of the ones who have pulled it off best in the past 12 months.
Damian Lewis
He’s definitely been cutting loose recently, playing things more pop star than Eton Pop, perhaps inspired by his rocker squeeze, Alison Mosshart, and the fact that he has taken a break from acting to concentrate on his music. A suede jacket and jeans on the red carpet is the new Lewis. Groovy, baby.
