Holy smoke show. Damian was spotted out and about in New York City arriving at his hotel, guitar in tow, on Monday, February 27, 2023 prior to an earlier taping of The Tonight Show with Stephen Colbert and the MGM+ A Spy Among Friends New York premiere. Looking every inch the musician, he’s totally giving us major Johnny Cash vibes. View more photos in our Gallery here.

Gentlemen, listen up. Damian Lewis has just delivered a masterclass in how to carry off the rockstar look over a certain age.

The actor, 52, who is in New York this week to promote the new MGM+ series, A Spy Among Friends, as well as his debut album as a recording artist, looked every inch the musician in his skinny jeans (note, not too skinny), a faux-fur-lined knitted bomber jacket and leather boots.

It helps that Lewis, whose wife Helen McCrory died in 2021, is now in a relationship with the Kills singer Alison Mosshart. She practically wrote the book on effortless rocker style and it’s often the case that couples unconsciously start to dress alike.

The look may seem like a departure from how we’ve seen him dressed at film premieres and on screen, but when you break it down, the elements aren’t all that different. Take the jeans: they’re not that much more slim fitting than the trousers of a tailored suit he wore on Monday. And the button-down knit beneath his jacket? Just a casual and cozy answer to the waistcoat, as often seen on fellow actor and Wrexham AFC co-owner Ryan Reynolds (flattering too if you’re self-conscious about your middle). The boots are the same pair that he’s worn recently with suits and mirror the shape of a narrow Oxford lace-up.

‘You get the sense that he’s comfortable in these clothes, which is 90 per cent of the battle when it comes to looking cool’

The items that really bring the look to life include the bomber jacket (not leather, which can look a little try-hard, but he has recently worn a camel leather jacket that works surprisingly well). The faux-fur lining is quite a statement, but it seems less outre when you realise that the temperature in New York is hovering at about 0 degrees celsius. Then there’s the sunglasses (a core element of any celebrity’s uniform) these ones have silver frames which look great with grey hair.

The guitar case, decorated with stickers, is entirely optional, although you have no business carrying one if you don’t know how to play the instrument. Lewis began playing the classical guitar at 13, so it’s safe to say that he knows what he’s doing.

Whether or not Lewis works with a stylist, and many in his position do, as it can help generate press coverage when promoting a new project – his appearance doesn’t seem too studied. The bomber is a little bobbled; the jeans and boots worn in. You get the sense that he’s comfortable in these clothes, which is 90 per cent of the battle when it comes to looking cool.

Choosing the right clothes for the occasion accounts for the rest, and in this look he’s pretty much concert stage ready.
