It was a solo outing for the star, who has been wed to actress Helen McCrory, 50, since 2007.

The couple – who raise children Manon, 12, and Gulliver, 11, together – took pride of place on the front row before the show began.

Helen and Damian first met while starring in Five Gold Rings at London’s Almeida theatre in 2003.

Director Michael Attenborough compared watching them together on stage to a ‘fire’ due to their electric chemistry.

Elaborating on how they make things work, she said it’s ‘really helpful’ being married to an actor as they understand how manic the schedule can be.

She explained: ‘We’re never our own masters, Damian and I, so it’s about being patient and kind to each other.

‘when the other person said they were going to be home at 7pm and you’ve made dinner, and they don’t actually get back till 3am… do you know what?

‘It’s not their fault, don’t give them a hard time. Even if it upsets you. Because they’re not in control of that.’
