Homeland actor Damian Lewis has praised the ‘heroic’ British Airways pilot who performed an emergency landing at London Gatwick.

The 46-year-old actor was travelling from Tenerife to Gatwick on January 2 when the pilot had to make an emergency landing due to ‘faulty hydraulics’.

Writing on Twitter the Band of Brothers star said: ‘Thanks to the skill of our pilot on BA 2731 who had to perform an emergency landing due to faulty hydraulics, my family and I are safe at home tonight. Thank you. #heroic’

Lewis is married to Peaky Blinders actress Helen McCrory and the couple have two children, daughter, Manon, 11, and son Gulliver, ten.

Fellow passenger James Harrison tweeted: ‘Huge kudos to the captain of flight BA2731 tonight keeping everyone calm with a bit of a strange landing surrounded by fire trucks at Gatwick.’

A spokeswoman for British Airways told MailOnline: ‘​The safety of our customers and crew is always our priority, and the flight landed normally after a suspected technical issue.
